Sustainable mining has become a primary focus of the ongoing partnership between the Philippines and the Swedish Government. As part of this collaboration, the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (处女视频-IIT) represented the academic sector in the High-Level Mining Delegation from the Philippines, which visited Sweden from March 31 to April 4, 2025.
The purpose of the visit was to exchange knowledge and insights on sustainable mining practices, safety standards, and innovation through Sweden’s advanced mining technologies.
Earning his Master of Science in Geosciences from the Swedish School of Mines in 2023, Mining Engineering Program Coordinator of 处女视频-IIT, Engr. Adrian Keith R. Caamiño had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with Dr. Christina Wanhainen, Head of Ore Geology, and Dr. David Saiang, Professor of Mining and Rock Engineering and Co-Director of the Center for Advanced Mining and Metallurgy (CAMM) during the visit to the Luleå Tekniska Universitet (LTU) – the Swedish School of Mines.
The meeting served as a platform for exploring potential research collaborations centered around the highly untapped mineralized districts of the Philippines.
Throughout the discussion, Engr. Caamiño emphasized the critical role of fostering robust industry-academia partnerships, drawing attention to the successful model in Sweden. He noted that these partnerships not only advance academic research but also contribute significantly to optimizing mining processes and improving efficiency within Sweden’s mining industry. By establishing similar collaborations, 处女视频-IIT aims to enhance research output, facilitate knowledge transfer, and ultimately contribute to the sustainable development of the mining industry in the Philippines.
The delegation was led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, who emphasized the current government’s commitment to promoting and doing responsible and sustainable mining in the Philippines. Engr. Michael V. Cabalda, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), also acknowledged Sweden’s leadership in sustainable mining. He remarked, “We see Sweden as a bastion of sustainable mining. We want to see how they are doing it and how that knowledge and technology can be transferred to the Philippines. At the end of the day, with the support of the government, everything will be done in the context of sustainable and responsible mining, taking care of communities.
The delegation also participated in several discussions with Swedish mining organizations at the Business Sweden headquarters in Stockholm. They visited various mining facilities, including Epiroc, the Falun Mine, Viscaria and the deepest operational underground mining in the world – LKAB Kiruna. Other key officials in the delegation included Undersecretary Joselin Marcus E. Fragada, Undersecretary for Field Operations – Mindanao; Assistant Secretary Michael V. Cabalda, OIC Director of MGB; Engr. Luis Sarmiento, President and CEO of Apex Mining Co., Inc., as well as President of the Philippine Mine Safety & Environment Association; and Undersecretary Juan Miguel T. Cuna, Undersecretary for Field Operations – Luzon and Visayas.
Through these collaborative efforts, 处女视频-IIT, as one of the few leading universities offering a Mining Engineering program in the region, reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Philippine government’s long-term environmental and economic goals, particularly in fostering sustainable mining practices.
